There’s something about the way certain procedures have taken over the cultural conversation.
The Brazilian Butt Lift is one of them. It keeps coming up everywhere. In consultations. DMs. Even in those conversations women have when they’re being honest about what they want for their bodies.
But what is it, really? And more importantly, how does it actually work?
What We’re Really Talking About
A Brazilian Butt Lift or BBL isn’t technically a lift at all.
What it is: a fat transfer. Your own fat, taken from where you do not want it to be and placed in the area you would like it to be.
The procedure removes fat from areas such as your abdomen, thighs, arms, back, waist, where it stubbornly resides and relocates it into your buttocks, hips or both.
The result is curves. Ones that look and feel completely natural because they are. It’s your body, just sculpted, redifined, with the fat redistributed.
What makes it different:
- No implants, no foreign materials
- Natural look and feel
- Slims donor areas while adding volume where you want it
- Results that move with you
The appeal isn’t hard to understand. You’re not just adding; you’re also taking away. And unlike implants, the results integrate seamlessly into your body.
How It Actually Happens
The process takes place in two separate phases, both equally important.
Phase One: Strategic Removal
Your surgeon first performs liposuction from the area where you want less fat. It is not random; it involves an understanding of your body’s proportions together with the creation of a general silhouette.
Depending on your specific procedure areas may include:
- Abdomen
- Arms and Thighs
- Waist and love handles
- Upper and Lower back
The fat is carefully and deliberately extracted. The aim is to harvest healthy fat cells while also simultaneously sculpting these areas into a more refined shape.
Phase Two: Placement
Here’s where it gets interesting. The harvested fat doesn’t go straight back in. It’s processed and purified, a crucial step that separates viable fat cells from everything else.
Only the healthiest cells make the cut, which directly impacts how well your results last.
Here is where the true skill enters. The surgeon places the fat in different planes and areas of your buttocks.
Nobody just dumps all the fat into one area; they’re creating dimension, projection, and shape that appear to be meant rather than simply inflated.
Placement is everything-the curve, the lift, how it looks from every possible angle.
What Recovery Looks Like
Here’s the part that mostly shocks and surprises people: the sitting restriction. For about 6 weeks after surgery, you cannot sit directly on your buttocks. You do have to sit on your thighs using a BBL pillow.
This means:
- You have to sleep on your stomach not your side or back (This recommendation is different if you had a breast procedure or tummy tuck with your BBL)
- Using a special BBL pillow in cases where sitting cannot be avoided
- More standing and walking to help you heal
Direct pressure on the newly transferred fat will destroy most of the cells trying to survive. The first two weeks are very important for your results.
Compression garments will also be worn on the areas where liposuction was performed.
Not on your buttocks, interestingly enough, but rather on the places from which fat was removed. This helps in swelling and support during the healing process.
Most people gradually return to work within one to two weeks, depending more specifically on what their job requires them to do physically.
It takes a longer time for the final results to be seen.
The swelling reduces gradually and the fat also takes time to settle; therefore, what is seen immediately after the procedure is not the final result.
Who This Works For
Not everyone can undergo this procedure. The most obvious limiting factor is that there must be sufficient fat to transfer.
If you are naturally skinny or just have a lower level of body fat, then there might not be enough to work with. This is not a procedure that magically creates volume out of nothing.
Good candidates have:
- Enough fat stores in the donor areas
- Generally healthy, stable weight
- Realistic expectations regarding results
- Willingness to follow post-op protocol instructions to the letter
- Non-smoker (or able to become one before and after surgery)
Age is rarely ever a determining factor. It’s mostly about health and body composition.
The Question You’re Probably Asking
Will it last? The fat cells that survive the transfer process, which is normally between 60 and 80 percent, are permanent residents.
Their action is similar to any other fat cells in your body and this implies that they have the capacity to swell or shrink depending on the changes in weight.
Maintain your weight, and your results can last for years!

A Few Questions We Hear Often
Do the results last?
Yes, those fat cells that have survived are permanent. The outcomes may be long-term in case the weight does not change.
Is it safe?
It is when it’s performed by an experienced surgeon like Dr Gordon, using proper technique. Choosing an experienced surgeon matters a lot!
When will I see the final result?
There is an immediate change in volume and shape. You still have some swelling at 3 months. Your final result appears at six months post-surgery.
Can I combine this with other procedures?
Many people do. Tummy tuck or breast augmentation can often be performed with fat transfer to the buttock. It is worth bringing up during your consultation.
Can fat be transferred to other areas?
Fat can be transferred to the breasts for people who are good candidates. Reach out to us if you are want to explore the option of breast fat transfer or natural breast augmentation.
